Managing Director, Mike Smith, has been helping Cobus Communications lead the way in the communications industry for the past 25 years. Cobus is nationally recognised as a leading provider of business communications services, with an outstanding reputation for quality and expertise.

Mike, can you explain about the services Cobus Communications offers?
We offer an alternative solution for businesses for all their telephony needs. We have wholesale agreements with all the major network providers and negotiate the best deals for lines and calls to pass on huge savings – it’s as simple as switching your gas or electricity provider. We also provide a range of quality products and professional services including telephone systems, business mobiles, CCTV solutions, door access control, and cable infrastructure.

Can you tell us about your journey to becoming MD at Cobus Communications?
I started at Cobus over 25 years ago as a YTS (apprentice) installer and gradually worked my way up from there. I’m extremely proud of Cobus and what we have all achieved, especially since 2013 when I bought the company outright and became sole shareholder. I refocused the business’s direction and reinforced its values and work ethic, providing a more efficient operation that we have built upon since.

Do you have any interesting facts/stories about Cobus?
Cobus were once asked to help Mohamed Al Fayed when his multimillion pound super yacht had telephony problems and wasn’t authorised to leave the port until communications had been restored. I received the call on my mobile early on a Saturday morning and arranged for an engineer and equipment to be flown out that evening.
The engineer worked through the night to reinstate full operations and check that all systems were back operational. The yacht was cleared for sailing, the next morning – as scheduled, and I don’t believe Mohamed Al Fayed was any the wiser! A very discreet and efficient job well done.

What does the future hold for Cobus Communications?
As the region’s leading provider of telephony and communication solutions the company’s main objective for the next two to three years is continued growth. Further investment and expansion into a wider area will also see Cobus and its brand become more of a national name and not just a regional one. Cobus has enjoyed an impressive 25 years but the future is looking even more impressive!
