Business of the Month: J. Rotherham

An English family business with a rich cultural heritage,  J Rotherham is proud to be one of the oldest and most highly respected stone masons in the United Kingdom today.

Based at their 17-acre state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Yorkshire for the past three generations, they create a stunning range of hand-carved architectural masonry for discerning clients around the globe.

When was J. Rotherham founded?
J. Rotherham’s journey began back in 1927 as a small, one-man monumental masonry company in East Yorkshire with business growing steadily and continuing in this way for many years. Commercial success ensued in 1973 when Joe Rotherham (Jnr) – the third generation – joined the business with ambitions to develop the company.
“We got involved in and started working on providing our services in marble and traditional stonemasonry to commercial areas like hotels and high-end residential,” explains Matt Rotherham, fourth generation MD. “From here it grew successfully and in the 1990s we started working with kitchen retailers and created a market for granite worktops.” In 2010, we also saw an opportunity to return to manufacturing stone fireplaces, using indigenous British limestones.

Can you tell us a little about your business and the services you provide?
J Rotherham Fireplaces – This branch of our business provides luxury British Fireplaces at great prices, made on-site. We have over 70 exquisite, hand crafted stone fireplaces in contemporary and traditional styles and a beautiful selection of British and European limestone choices, as well as wood, marble and new cutting edge sintered stone materials. We also offer a full range of heating appliances including; gas, electric, multi fuel and wood burning stoves as well as solid fuel, electric and gas fires and provide a full, comprehensive service from consultation and design, to manufacture and installation.
We also manufacture J.Rotherham kitchen worktops using the most advanced, stone working technology along with traditional methods of craftsmanship to transform the most beautiful, exotic stone from around the world into exquisite kitchen worktops and breakfast bars. J.Rotherham Memorials have also been crafting hand-carved stone memorials of distinction for over four generations.

Can you share some of the notable milestones that have helped shape J. Rotherham along the way?
In 1988 we were the first company in the UK stone industry to start using a CNC machine and 20 years later the first to bring a seven-axis robot into our production processes. It is this synergy between highly skilled craftsmanship and technological capability that has enabled us to stand apart from the market

What does the future hold?
Our people will always remain key to the business and our training and development on this side is taking big steps forward; craftsmanship is essential to hand finishing and retaining high-quality products, upon which the company’s reputation sits.
We are always looking at different products and solutions in terms of innovation and part of this is about having the right mix of technology and people skills to adapt to our production needs. Next year we will be extending our facilities by a further 25,000 square feet, which for the first time in a while gives us the opportunity to build a new production line from scratch to accompany our existing two.
