Catch up with your mayor, Terence Smith

He’s back! Mayor of Goole, Terence Smith, wanted to take a moment to wish Our Goole readers a belated Happy New Year and catch you up on what’s in store for 2017.

I can’t quite believe that we are in February 2017 already. I hope the new year is going well for you so far. 2016 will be forever marked in my mind as a year of change. At times, it felt as though the year would never end-we lost so many great people including the star man David Bowie, the great Gene Wilder and, of course, Victoria Wood.

But last year wasn’t all bad and did in fact have some great highlights. I became mayor of the town I love, and I couldn’t be prouder to represent Goole and the wonderful people who live here. I’ve given it my best shot and have been fully dedicated to my role.

I have four months left of my term and have so many exciting things planned for them. We will be holding a youth day which will be an opportunity to get young people engaged and active in the community, in politics and to hear their views on how Goole can work better for them.

In Goole, we are also the gateway to Hull, this year’s City of Culture, and should be really proud of places demonstrating that such as Junction, which is always busy and has some great events lined up throughout the year. And if that’s not enough to be happy about, the mayor’s show this year is set to be the best ever-with a few surprises along the way.

My time as mayor wouldn’t be as great without the people of Goole, and I need you all in 2017. I need your views and ideas in order to get Goole well and truly on the map in 2017. There’s so much in our town to celebrate and be proud of, and we should be making the most of every day spent here.

So go and visit The Lowther, now the oldest hotel in the country, see a show at the Junction or take a look around our museum and shout about how great this town is. Let’s be positive about our great town and show that things can only get better in Goole.

Until next time, Terence.
