Fitmums & Friends launching new club in Howden and new activity in Goole

This summer, athletics club and charity, Fitmums & Friends is launching new activities in Howden and Goole. Howden Fitmums & Friends will begin regular run sessions at 7pm on Wednesday 29 June 2022 from St Cuthbert’s Masonic Hall in Howden. Goole Fitmums & Friends will start a new fitness walking session in Goole’s West Park at 10am on Tuesday 28 June. Both clubs welcome men and women of all abilities.

Howden Fitmums & Friends will offer run distances of one to four miles at its weekly Wednesday evening club sessions, with runners choosing the distance that feels right for them and running at their own pace. The club can support both more regular runners and those who are new or returning to running – a ‘new/return to running’ 1-mile group will be available for those who don’t yet feel ready to run a mile non-stop.

Goole Fitmums & Friends’ fitness walking session is for anyone who wants an effective and enjoyable walking workout. Meeting outside the Community Cafe in West Park on a Tuesday morning, the group will walk for one to three miles and accommodate all paces. The group will welcome children in buggies and is also menopause-friendly.

Every Fitmums & Friends run and walk is supported by a trained volunteer leader who helps all members achieve their fitness goals, keeps the group together and makes sure no one is ever left behind. Chief Officer and founder of Fitmums & Friends, Sam Barlow BEM explains: “At Fitmums & Friends, we are passionate about supporting everyone to become more active, from complete beginners to those who already exercise regularly. When we run and walk, we use a simple support system known as “shepherding” which enables people of all abilities to exercise together – it supports those who need to go at a steadier pace and still provides a challenge for those who are more capable. As a result, everyone is fit enough for our sessions.”

Sam adds: “If you’re thinking about being more active, then do come along and give our clubs a try. You don’t have to be fit, nor do you have to be a mum – the ‘& Friends’ is just as important! Everyone really does fit at Fitmums & Friends, so please join us if you would like to get fit, make friends and have fun!”

Fitmums & Friends is open to men and women aged 16+. People who are new to the club can attend their first sessions for free to find out what Fitmums & Friends is all about before joining. Membership, which allows members to attend any session at any club, costs £36 per year. (If the membership cost is a barrier to anyone, the club may be able to help through its Mike Barlow Memorial Fund.)
