Free compost giveaway

Residents of Goole and surrounding areas can get their hands on some free compost as the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s annual free compost giveaways gets underway next month.

Around 5,000 bags of compost will be handed out for free at 10 giveaway events held across the East Riding.

Residents are invited to go along to the events to collect two free 15kg bags of compost per car, which will be placed in their vehicles by council staff.

All the compost being given away has been recycled from the garden and food waste that householders in the area put into their brown bins.

That includes grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds, cooked and uncooked food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, meat and egg shells – which can all be turned into compost for the garden.

Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment, said: “Our annual compost giveaways are a gesture from the council to say thank you to the residents of the East Riding for their fantastic efforts in recycling their rubbish.

“All the garden and food waste residents place in their brown bins is recycled into compost, so every time people put their bins out for collection they know their waste will be going to good use and helping the environment.”

The giveaways start at 4pm at each site except Beverley which starts at 10am.

The events end when all the bags have been given away on a first come first served basis.

Residents are asked not to queue beforehand or they may be turned away for safety reasons.
