Local Snaith Scouts help families prepare safely for August’s solar eclipse

Snaith, East Riding of Yorkshire – As excitement builds for the August 12, 2026 solar eclipse, members of 1st Snaith Scouts are helping spread an important message throughout the local community: enjoy the eclipse safely.

Serving young people from Snaith, Hensall, Rawcliffe Bridge and neighbouring communities, 1st Snaith Scouts has joined an international youth initiative that encourages families to experience one of Britain’s biggest astronomical events in nearly 30 years safely and responsibly.

The eclipse will cover approximately 90% of the Sun across much of the United Kingdom, making it the country’s most significant solar eclipse in nearly three decades. With thousands of people expected to look skyward, experts remind the public that the Sun should only be viewed using properly certified solar eclipse glasses.

To help raise awareness, 1st Snaith Scouts has partnered with The Fin Whale Eclipse Project, a Canadian youth-led initiative created by five young women from Ontario that combines eclipse education with marine conservation.

The project highlights a remarkable natural connection. The path of the August 12 eclipse closely follows many of the same North Atlantic waters travelled each year by fin whales as they migrate between feeding grounds near Greenland and Iceland and waters around the British Isles, France and northern Spain.

The initiative also partners with ORCA, the UK charity dedicated to protecting whales, dolphins and porpoises around Britain’s coastline. Through this collaboration, 15% of gross sales made through ORCA’s dedicated project page help support marine conservation.

“Our goal is simple,” said the team behind The Fin Whale Eclipse Project. “We want every family to experience this incredible eclipse safely while discovering one of the world’s most magnificent animals. Scout groups are wonderful partners because they care about education, community service and protecting the natural world.”

The Fin Whale Eclipse Project follows the success of the team’s 2024 Monarch Butterfly Eclipse Project, which helped distribute more than 500,000 certified solar eclipse glasses across North America, generated international media coverage and raised significant funding for wildlife conservation.

With eclipse day fast approaching, local families are encouraged to obtain certified eclipse glasses before supplies become limited.

Families throughout Snaith, Hensall, Goole and the surrounding area can support 1st Snaith Scouts while preparing safely for the eclipse by visiting the group’s dedicated project page: https://finwhaleeclipse-eu.myshopify.com/Snaith-Scouts

Certified solar eclipse glasses are shipped from England with free UK shipping, making it easy for local families to prepare well before eclipse day.
