Rawcliffe resident fined for flytipping

Rawcliffe resident Liam Harbottle has been fined £300 after pleading guilty to dumping tiles, piping and plumbers’ waste at a well-known fly-tipping site.

Council officers visited Dobella Lane, Rawcliffe, in June, 2019 – a known problem area for flytipping – and found tiles, piping and plumbers’ waste.

Subsequent investigations led to Mr Harbottle, 36, of High Street, Rawcliffe, being interviewed under caution in Goole on 2 October, 2019. At the interview, Mr Harbottle admitted leaving the waste and was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice, which he failed to pay.

The case against Harbottle was heard at Hull Magistrates Court on 6 November, 2020. Although Mr Harbottle did not appear at court, he did plead guilty in writing to a fly tipping offence and was ordered to pay a fine and victim surcharge totalling £300.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is encouraging residents to dispose of their waste properly and legally by using their household bins, by taking it to household waste recycling sites, or by using the council’s bulky waste service.

Anyone caught fly-tipping could be ordered to pay a £400 fixed penalty notice or the case can be taken to court, where they face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.

Paul Tripp, head of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Even though we’re in lockdown, that’s no excuse for residents to ignore their responsibilities and dump waste.

“That is still illegal, and even during lockdown we continue to investigate all reports of fly-tipping and littering and take the necessary enforcement action.”
