Students at Read School, Drax have wowed audiences with their latest drama production, a two-night rendition of the Dickens musical, Oliver!
The show rode along on a wave of enthusiasm from the opening bars of ‘Food, Glorious Food!’ to its rousing, full cast finale. Performances of note were: Lily Smith as Nancy – A beautiful portrayal, expertly depicting the many different strands of Nancy’s character. With several well-known numbers to sing this was a big part and Lily carried it off superbly. Jack Armstrong as Fagin – Complete with a Ron Moody-style beard, Jack relished the big songs such as You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two.
A special mention must go to Matthew Roberts for stepping in at the last minute to take on the role of Bill Sikes, in addition to that of Mr Sowerberry the undertaker, and portraying both with polish. Alongside superb performances from Year 7 pupils Ben Abrams and Tom Scholefield (Oliver and the Artful Dodger), many of the younger pupils got involved in this year’s production, a testament to the hard work of the creative arts team.
