Turnbridge restaurant shortlisted for Best Afternoon Tea awards

The Peppered Pig in Turnbridge, near Goole, has been shortlisted for Yorkshire’s Best Afternoon Tea in the Yorkshire’s Finest Taste Awards 2016.

The restaurant is proving to be a real jewel in the crown when it comes to the county’s finest eateries. Their afternoon tea has knocked the socks of those who’ve tried it and become a ‘must-have’ so it’s no surprise that they’ve been shortlisted as one of the best.

Run in association with ASDA, the Taste Awards are now the biggest and most respected awards of their kind in the region. They attract entries from new and innovative businesses each year as well as more established businesses.

The judging panel is made up of food experts including local chefs Steph Moon and Matthew Benson-Smith, supermarket buyers and retail experts with BBC Radio 2 food critic Nigel Barden.

The overall winners for each category will be announced at a glitzy black tie awards ceremony at the Pavilions of Harrogate on Wednesday, 2 November 2016.

Head chef at The Peppered Pig, Matthew Brewer, has a Yorkshire appetite in mind when it comes to afternoon tea. The open sandwiches, sliced from homemade bread are baked using flour from Driffield.  They are filled with Happy Trotters home baked ham with Yorkshire chutney from Mercers; other top favourites are Kealey’s butchers’ rare topside beef and horseradish; egg mayonnaise and chives; and smoked salmon with Longley Farm cream cheese.

The highlight is home baking from their on-site bakery, which is overseen by Sam – a trained artisan baker with The School for Artisan Food. There’s always a homemade tart such as brie and red onion filo, but these, like their cakes, change with the seasons, depending on what’s good to eat locally or in the hedgerows.

They use Yorkshire gooseberries and foraged elderflowers in their signature gooseberry and elderflower sponge drizzle for example, and their Demerara scones are homemade with lashings of clotted cream and Mercers’ strawberry preserve. Customers can finish with a shot of lemon meringue with homemade curd and citrus jelly.

For an even more unique experience “Lola” their resident VW camper van is available to hire for those special Champagne Afternoon Tea occasions.

The Peppered Pig is a delicatessen, tea room and nursery by day and a warm, and cosy restaurant by night. Owners Glen and Sam Mitchell are currently developing the site to make way for a beautiful 6 bedroom boutique hotel and function room.

Tickets for the Yorkshire’s Finest Taste Awards 2016 are priced at £55 and are available to buy online at www.DeliciouslyYorkshire.co.uk
